While the gaming industry prides itself on innovation and invention, nothing really beats the sweet taste of nostalgia. For most players, video games are a formative part of their childhoods, growing up during the Nintendo boom and playing retro classics like Mortal Kombat, Pokémon, and Super Mario Bros. This nostalgic grip on gamers led to revivals and reiterations of several older titles while giving the emulation industry a big boost. However, not everything needs to be an adaptation – something 2013’s Tomb Raider banked on with its relaunch for Android and iOS fans.
Today, we’ll be looking at the newly launched Tomb Raider for Android and iOS and seeing how well it measures up to the memories and how it's been tweaked to stay compatible with modern devices. First, let’s get a better understanding of the game itself.
Hello Again, Lara
Tomb Raider first graced our screens in 1996 with a sharp polygonal design and a zest for adventure. The franchise follows British archaeologist and adventurer, Lara Croft, as she travels the world looking for artifacts and solving puzzles. Since then, the game has had several iterations, movie adaptations, and more, instantly becoming a cult classic in the gaming sphere.
Now, you can become a raider too from the comfort of your phone or tablet with the newly launched 2013 version of the game. Originally launched for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the 2013 Tomb Raider has now been fully rebuilt and optimized for iOS and Android by Feral Interactive – the same London-based studio behind the most technically ambitious mobile adaptations we’ve seen so far.

This new game, developed by Eidos Montreal, Crystal Dynamics, and Feral Interactive, explores the world of a young and inexperienced Lara Croft after being washed up on the isolated island of Yamatai following a shipwreck. Players get to enjoy the original cinematic storyline of Lara building herself up into the hardened adventurer she is today, packed with exploration, intense firefights, puzzles, and Challenge Tombs. Players will hunt for materials, unlock skills, uncover relics, and unravel the mysteries of the island and its cultists.
What Gamers Can Expect
Heading into the game, players can expect the same complete original campaign as the video game, only now equipped with a fully customizable touchscreen interface, gyroscopic aiming capabilities, and a dynamic gamepad, depending on the device being used. The game also features mouse and keyboard for those looking for a more immersive bite of nostalgia; however, this is limited to iPadOS and Android only.

Visually, the game tries to maintain its PS3 graphics as much as possible; however, it is still tailored with better textures and lighting to allow high-end devices to reach 120FPS. The game’s mobile ports have been expertly adapted and come with 12 DLC packs, including skills, weapon upgrades, and a variety of skins for Lara. The title also comes with optimization presets for performance and visuals suited to specific devices.
-
Graphics Mode prioritizes visual fidelity over high frame rates.
-
Performance Mode ensures smoother gameplay with slightly pared-down graphics.
-
Performance Plus Mode offers 120FPS for certain iPad Pro models.
-
Battery Saver Mode reduces both graphical fidelity and frame rate to conserve battery life.

Now, let’s look at how the newly released Tomb Raider has been faring in the gaming community so far.
How the Gaming Community Responded
Generally, the launch of a game for a mobile platform garners quite a bit of attention on its own; however, having a game as legendary as Tomb Raider finally on the smaller screen was definitely a highlight for most gamers. Currently, the game sits at a respectable 4.6 rating on the Google Play Store, with many of the comments praising the title’s incredible touch controls, full customization, graphics, and gameplay.
Much of the general sentiment online has been enthusiastic, with a lot of fans in the IGN YouTube trailer comments reminiscing about how far developers have come since the original game was sometimes too much for their PCs to handle back in the day.

When it comes to gameplay reviews, Tomb Raider remains a fan favorite for most players. ExxotikGaming tested out the new game and was blown away by the gameplay, customization options, and porting. He noted that most of the custom settings are typically found with PC games and that many mobile games fail to introduce the same level of precision that this game does.

Overall, he ended up giving the game a solid eight out of 10 after a minor glitch during gameplay; however, he maintains that it’s one of the best mobile games you can get in 2026, stating that it's a rare game that’s actually worth the money it costs for its entire single-player campaign.
For Pocket Gamer, the game showcased a “perfect port”, with fluid gameplay, intuitive controls, and challenging puzzles. In the end, they concluded that Tomb Raider is just as much of a masterpiece on mobile as it was upon its console release in 2013, stating further that “Feral Interactive has managed to bring all the harsh beauty, action, and excitement of the original to mobile without sacrificing content or gameplay.”
